When beginning any project, I start by coming up with a general idea I want to convey. Once I have an idea nailed down, I brainstorm through sketches and word lists what mediums, materials, techniques, and subject matter best represent this idea.
I discovered my junior year, while simultaneously taking Sculpture 1 and Painting 2, that I prefer experimenting with different combinations of 2D and 3D materials. This process allows me to work with mediums that I know well while pushing my comfort zone and creativity when trying to find ways to add sculptural elements in a cohesive manner.
After I have finalized an idea, I start creating my piece with a mindset that is open to changes and alterations based on challenges I may come across. Being willing to adapt and change my ideas along the way has drastically improved my art.
