Hi, I’m Charlie Classe. I believe that art not only has the power but the responsibility to target certain issues through visual representations that serve as a call to action, an apology, or a critique. Therefore, my artwork visually encapsulates the experiences of being a minority in order to spark dialogue, conversation, and change. My artwork asks questions like, “What does it mean to be Chinese during COVID-19?”, “What does it mean to be Chinese in a family unit?”, and “How can a commercialized culture become more valued than the culture itself?” From the prominent rise in sinophobia, Asians have been forced to use their unheard voices to defend their skin color once again. Art has the potential to grant people a purpose, a medium to express themselves, a vehicle to advocate for the change they are so desperate to see, and an opportunity to invoke the same passion in others.
